[CD4.sup.} T-cell immunodeficiency is more dependent on immune activation than viral load in HIV-infected children on highly active antiretroviral therapy
Article Abstract:
The association between [CD4.sup.4] depletion and immune activation in HIV-1 infected children on highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) is analyzed. Results reveal that elevated immune activation is responsible for [CD4.sup.} depletion rather than HIV replication because immunologic status is associated directly to immune activation and not to viral load levels in HIV-infected children on HAART.

Immunological effects of novel mutational strategies for viral escape
Article Abstract:
The discussion of viral fitness was ensued by focusing on the clinical relevance of 2 overlapping areas of research, replicative capacity and viral cytopathic effect. It is concluded that viral escape occurs almost invariably under drug pressure, yet the virus pays a price in replicative capacity or cytopathic capability, but these are distinct phenomena.

Therapeutic vaccination with a GP120-depleted whole killed virus vaccine candidate (REMUNE) in antiretroviral-naive HIV-infected patients
Article Abstract:
Preliminary results from a phase II REMUNE study in four clinical centers were presented to stimulate HIV-specific immunity and potentially delay disease progression. The results were reported from week 28 and there were no safety issues identified with REMUNE or changes in CD4s or viral load 12 weeks after the first injection.
